The Power of Positive Thinking

Fun fact: coaches have coaches. Just like you, we want to be the best versions of ourselves.

I was recently in a coaching session (as the client) and in response to my assumed belief, the coach said, “Do you know that to be 100% true?” I most definitely did not. In another session (again as the client), in response to a fear I shared, the coach said, “What’s the opposite thought associated with that fear?”

Another fun fact: in the past, I’ve used both of these strategies with my clients. Even so, it was powerful for me to hear those questions in relation to the issue that I was working through.

So much of negative thinking is about perception. As humans, it’s hard to break our established pattern of giving into that perception and just stick to the facts. I’ve worked on this very issue with clients and perhaps it pertains to you, too.

If so, consider this exercise:

The next time you have a negative thought, write it down. Maybe even make a list of a few negative thoughts that frequently come up for you. Then consider what would happen if the opposite of those thoughts was true and write those down, too. Which thought is serving you better?

With this exercise, you’re on your way to starting a new habit - positive thinking. When thinking positively, you’re more likely to focus on the solution rather than the problem and make changes that benefit you in the long-run.
