Practice makes…
I recently rewatched the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Women’s Gymnastics All-Around competition. (That’s a mouthful.)
As a former college athlete, watching elite athletes perform always makes me emotional. They sacrifice so much and work so hard to be able to compete on the world stage; years of practice go into a 90-second routine, 100-meter run, or three-minute fencing bout that we see on TV.
Practice is critical in coaching, but not how you might think.
During coaching sessions, we partner to develop practices that set us up for success and keep you accountable during the process. It’s about reviewing current habits, identifying those that do and don’t serve you, and creating new practices that advance you toward your goal. This emphasis on thinking for the future is a big part of what separates coaching from therapy.
The practices we design during our sessions help build your capacity over time so you have a strong foundation on which to improve your skills. Practices should be simple and you should be able to repeat them with intention. But it’s all about finding the right practices for you. Together we drill down to what you’re willing and able to achieve now and identify the resources and support you’ll need to achieve your overall goals.
Ready to ditch an old habit and build a new practice? Practicing your practices doesn’t take Olympic strength, but it will take commitment — and a great coach who will guide you every step of the way.
